POSTECH Alumni Hyungjun Kim and Jungin Lee Named Forbes Korea’s 30 Under 30 😊 Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) alumni Hyungjun Kim and Jungin Lee have been recognized on Forbes Korea’s 30 under 30 List (30 notables under 30 years old) for 2024. Hyungjun Kim, a graduate of the Department of Convergence IT Engineering with bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees, is celebrated for his groundbreaking work in reducing AI model weight. During his graduate studies, Kim embarked on continuous research endeavors in AI model optimization, eventually co-founding SqueezeBits upon graduation. His innovations have revolutionized AI lightweighting and acceleration technologies for various AI models deployed in real-world industrial settings, resulting in significant cost savings and performance enhancements for corporate AI services. This remarkable feat has earned him recognition as a leader in the Deep/Enterprise Tech sector. Jungin Lee, another distinguished alumnus from the Department of Mathematics, has been lauded for his contributions to the advancement of the domestic mathematics landscape and recognized as a leading figure in the Science/Software category. Lee defied convention by completing the typically five- to six-year integrated master’s and doctoral program in number theory in just three years. With a Ph.D. obtained in August 2020, Lee was appointed as an assistant professor in the Department of Mathematics at Ajou University on September 1, 2023. His innovative application of probabilistic ideas to algebraic objects in number theory has earned him acclaim for his originality within the academic community.

Are High-Purity Cathode Materials Truly Necessary?s A research team led by Professor Yong-Tae Kim from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH), in collaboration with Professor Kyu-Young Park from the Graduate Institute of Ferrous & Eco Materials Technology and the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at POSTECH, and the research team of Dr. Woochul Jung from the Research Institute of Industrial Science and Technology (RIST), has discovered that the purity specifications for cathode materials, as set by cell manufacturers, are overly stringent. Their research demonstrates that streamlining the lithium refining process could substantially reduce the unit cost of batteries. The research findings are published in ‘Nature Communications’, one of international scientific journals. Professor Yong-Tae Kim who led the research stated, " Secondary battery cell manufacturers need to reassess whether their current cathode material specifications are too stringent." Metamaterials and AI Converge, Igniting Innovative Breakthroughs A research team, comprising Professor Junsuk Rho from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, the Department of Chemical Engineering, and the Department of Electrical Engineering, and PhD candidates Seokho Lee and Cherry Park from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH), has recently published a paper that highlights the next generation of research trends that combine metaphotonics research with artificial intelligence. Recently, a collaborative team led by Professor Jin Kon Kim and Dr. Keon-Woo Kim of Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH), Professor Taesung Kim and M.S./Ph.D. student Hyunho Seok of Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU), and Professor Hong Chul Moon of University of Seoul (UOS) has brought a step closer to making this realty. This research work was published in Advanced Materials. A Breakthrough in All-Solid-State Battery Technology, Enhancing the Performance of the Lithium from the Bottom A research team, consisting of Professor Soojin Park from the Department of Chemistry, PhD candidate Sangyeop Lee from the Division of Advanced Materials Science, and Dr. Sungjin Cho and Master’s student Hyunbeen Choi from the Department of Chemistry at Pohang University of Science and Technology , and Dr. Jin Hong Kim and Dr. Hongyeul Bae from the POSCO N.EX.T Hub, has recently enhanced the performance and durability of all-solid-state batteries successfully. This breakthrough was made possible through the implementation of a novel approach known as bottom electrodeposition. Their research has been published in the international journal ‘Small.’ Professor Soojin Park who led the research expressed his commitment by saying, "We have devised an enduring all-solid-state battery system through a novel electrodeposition strategy." He added, "With further research, we aim to provide more effective ways to enhance battery life and increase energy density." Have Metalenses Expanded Their Reach into the Ultraviolet Region? A collaborative research team, comprising Professor Junsuk Rho from the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Chemical Engineering and PhD candidates Joohoon Kim and Yeseul Kim from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at POSTECH, and Professor Heon Lee and Wonjoong Kim from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Korea University, has devised a technique for the mass production of large-area metalenses tailored for use in the ultraviolet region. The findings of their research have been published in ‘Materials Today’, an international journal in the field of materials. Professor Junsuk Rho who led the research expressed the team's commitment by stating, "This marks the first instance of implementing a metalens with exceptional light-modulation capabilities over a large area in the ultraviolet region."
